The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said Tuesday that it will select the winner of its fighter jet program in a meeting on Sept. 24.

The meeting will be presided over by Minister of National Defense Kim Kwan-jin, the DAPA said.

On Sept. 13, DAPA officials briefed President Park Geun-hye on the results of biddings and evaluations on three bidders - Boeing's F-15 Silent Eagle (SE), Lockheed Martin's F-35 and the EADS' Eurofighter.

Of them, Boeing's F-15 SE is the only candidate to meet the 8.3 trillion won (US$7.2 billion) set aside for the fighter program.

Boeing, if selected as successful bidder, will provide the South Korean Air Force with 60 F-15 SEs between 2017 and 2021 to replace its aging fleet of F-4s and F-5s.

However, controversy has erupted over the combat capability of the stealth version of the F-15 modified for South Korea.

A group of 15 retired Air Force generals opposed the selection of Boeing's F-15 SE as successful bidder, noting that the fighter program is aimed at acquiring next-generation fighter jets.
