Beginning July 4, South Korean post-apocalyptic sci-fi film "Snowpiercer" will be screened at 250 theaters across the United States, its distributor in Seoul said Wednesday.

The action thriller, directed by Bong Joon-ho, was released at eight U.S. theaters on June 27, following a series of openings in 11 countries, including Italy, France, China, Japan and Taiwan, since October last year.

The number of U.S. theaters to screen the movie has risen sharply, thanks to favorable reviews published by major U.S. news outlets, including the New York Times, USA Today and the L.A. Times, according to the distributor, CJ E&M.

The film, based on the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige,” is Bong’s English-language debut film.

It stars actor Song Kang-ho and actress Ko Ah-sung, both of South Korea; and Hollywood stars Chris Evans, Ed Harris and Octavia Spencer; and Jamie Bell and Tilda Swinton, both British.
