Other finalists chosen in the passenger sedans category are Ford Mustang and Volkswagen Golf.
The winner will be announced at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show, after being chosen by a vote of about 60 U.S. and Canadian journalists. The Detroit show will be held from Jan. 17-25.
Genesis won the North American Car of the Year in 2009, becoming the first South Korean model to win the honor.
In 2012, Hyundai Avante, called Elantra in North American, was named the North American Car of the Year in the compact car category.
