Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors said that four of their models took No. 1 spots in a 2014 vehicle dependability study (VDS) conducted in China.

According to the results of the study released on Tuesday, Hyundai's Verna sedan, called the Accent in South Korea, won the top honor in the compact upper segment of the VDS by J.D. Power and Associates, a U.S.-based marketing information service provider, Hyundai said in a press release.

Two other Hyundai models ranked at No. 1 were the Elantra (the Avante XD in South Korea) in the midsize basic category; and the Yuedong (the Avante HD in South Korea) in the midsize segment.

Kia's Sportage topped the list in the midsize sports utility vehicle (SUV) category.

The dependability study is based on a survey of about 17,000 people who purchased their cars between June 2010 and August 2011 in 43 cities across China. This year's winners were selected from among a total of 155 models of 55 different brands sold in China's auto market.
