CJ CGV, South Korea's largest multiplex cinema chain, said Friday it joined the ranks of the top 10 in China's box-office sales for the firs time in 2014.

The movie theater chain said it jumped seven notches to 10th place last year, by attracting 15 million moviegoers, more than a 20-fold rise from two years earlier.

The 2014 sales figure marks a 51 percent increase from the previous year.

Its market share stood at 2 percent in China with a population of more than 1.3 billion, where there are about 250 similar multiplex chains.

CJ CGV, which opened its first theater in China in 2006, now runs 38 theaters in big Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan. Tienjin, Fushun, Shenyang, Yentai, Ningbo, Harbin, Chungching, Panjin, Wuhu, Zhongshan, Changsha and Tangshan.

It plans to increase the number of its theaters in China to 64 in 2015 and 80 or more in 2016 with the aim of entering the top 5 within 2-3 years, employees said.

The Chinese movie market has been growing fast in recent years, becoming the world’s second largest film market after the United States.
