Ssangyong Motor, the local unit of Indian sport utility vehicle (SUV) manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra, plans to export 1,000 Korando Turismos to Morocco this year, industry sources said Thursday.

Those multi-leisure vehicles will replace aging taxis in the northwestern African country, they said.

Last year, Ssangyong shipped about 260 vehicles, including Rexton Ws, Korando Cs and Korando Turismos, to Morocco.

The carmaker received orders for 1,000 more Korando Turismos from dealers in the African nation, the sources said.

Exports of Ssangyong vehicles reached 72,011 units last year, including 5,731 Korando Turismos, up 11.2 percent from the previous year, according to industry data.

In contrast, sales of Korando Turismos on its home turf plunged 58.7 percent to 670 units in the first two months of this year from the same period last year, mainly due to robust sales of Kia Motors' minivan Carnival.
