An expelled South Korean university professor was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Thursday for habitually beating his pupil and forcing him to eat human feces and drink urine.

The 52-year-old, identified only by his surname Jang, was expelled from his university south of Seoul in August after he was arrested on charges of violent acts.

The court handed down heavier punishment than a jail term demanded by prosecutors, citing cruel acts "beyond imagination" that began in early 2013 when the 29-year-old victim was hired at Jang's non-profit organisation which publishes academic journals and hosts forums related to design.

"Such an act is tantamount to psychological murder," the Suwon District Court said in its ruling.

Three other people, who were also former students employed at Jang's organisation, were sentenced to three to six years in prison for participating in physical and psychological assault.

They were found guilty of beating the victim habitually with a baseball bat and other weapons over alleged professional mistakes and poor character.

They also allegedly covered the victim's face with a plastic bag filled with pepper spray, or forced him to eat human feces and drink urine from plastic bottles.

The victim once attempted to commit suicide and underwent surgery last year to repair damages to his right thigh, but he told investigators that he had put up with the abuse in the hope that Jang might help him become a professor.

The case sparked a public fury after the scene of cruel acts was released online.
