South Korea and U.S are to carry out a joint exercise which simulates destroying North Korea’s nuclear and missile facilities. The exercise will be carried out as early as March.
South Korea’s defense official said the joint exercise will be applied with “4D Operational Concept”. 4D means to detect, defend, disrupt and destroy. The exercise’s aim is to neutralize Pyongyang’s missile abilities.
The joint exercise is most likely to be carried out in March, during Key Resolve, which is an annual joint exercise carried out between South Korea and the U.S. Key Resolve is based on a series of simulation event aimed for both nations’ military to cooperate and enhancing communication and operational efficiency.
During the 4D applied exercises, South Korea, and the U.S. are expected to update their target list of the North’s nuclear facilities in an effort to prepare preemptive strikes on the targets. Their goal is to neutralize the facilities before Pyongyang sets move to using them.
The exercise also includes a drill. When a missile launch is detected, both forces will detect and launch countermeasures in less than three minutes.
