A 35-year-old plumber has been arrested for dangerous climbing on apartment buildings with no equipment 23 times at night to steal money and valuables, police said Thursday.

His two-week exploit ended on January 30 when a closed-circuit television installed on the roof of an apartment building showed him breaking into a nearby apartment room in Yongin, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Seoul.

"He used gas pipes for climbing," an investigator at a Yongin police station told Aju News, adding targeted apartments were more than 10 years old with gas pipes installed on their walls outside.

The man identified by his surname Chang was accused of stealing money and valuables estimated at 78 million won (65,000 US dollars), the investigator said.

"For his dangerous climbing at night, he just used cheap gloves and sneakers without ropes or special equipment," he said, adding he had ascended up to the 11th floor.

The plumber had no experience in buildering or urban climbing, he said.

Buildering describes the act of climbing on the outside of buildings and other artificial structures.
