Satellite imagery showed dozens of North Korean artillery pieces have been brought out for a live-fire drill simulating an attack on the office of South Korean President Park Geun-hye, military authorities said Wednesday.

The North's military placed about 30 camouflaged artillery pieces in a shooting range in early April, about one kilometer away from a site where a replica of Seoul's presidential Blue House was erected, according to the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Imagery from South Korea's Arirang commercial satellite revealed the deployment of artillery pieces for an exercise ahead of the congress of North Korea's ruling Workers Party on May 6. It will North Korea's first party congress since October 1980.

North Korea has warned of an attack on South Korea's president with newly developed multiple rocket launchers or other weapons amid high cross-border tensions caused by a series of nuclear and ballistic missile tests conducted by North Korea this year.
