South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries said Monday it has clinched an 187 million US dollar order to build a desalination plant capable of producing some 200,000 tons of fresh water a day in Iran.

Doosan said it has received an order from Sazeh Sazan to build the plant for 220 billion won ($187 million). Construction will be completed by October 2018. The company will be in charge of the plant's operation and maintenance for 12 years.

Doosan Heavy was the first foreign company to win a desalination plant order in Iran after international sanctions on the country was lifted earlier this year. South Korean companies have received a flurry of orders in Iran since President Park Geun-hye visited the country in early May.

In May, Doosan Heavy also received a 460 billion won deal to build a desalination plant in Kuwait.

Doosan Heavy is a key subsidiary of the Doosan Group, which has aggressively restructured its bloated group structure to reduce its group-wide debt which stood at 11 trillion won at the end of last year. The group hopes to lower its debt to eight trillion won by the end of this year.
