Asiana's new budget carrier, Air Seoul, won government approval to launch services to 16 international destinations, transport authorities said Tuesday, amid fierce competition among South Korean carriers.

Air Seoul became the sixth low-cost carrier (LCC) which would launch four daily flights starting next Monday between Seoul and the southern resort island of Jeju.

The budget carrier is set to lease three Airbus A321-200s from its parent company which already runs its first LCC, Air Busan.

Air Seoul has applied to operate mid-distance international flights to Japan, China, Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam, the transport ministry said.
