Iran's late film director Abbas Kiarostami has been selected to win the Asian Filmmaker of the Year at this year's film festival in the southern city of Busan, organizers said Monday.

An active film-maker from 1970, Kiarostami who died on July 4 at the age of 76 had worked extensively as a screenwriter, film editor, art director and producer and had designed credit titles and publicity material.

The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) said the director's son would receive the award for his father at the BIFF opening ceremony on October 6.

Kiarostami was part of a generation of filmmakers in the Iranian New Wave, a Persian cinema movement that started in the late 1960s and includes pioneering directors who share many common techniques including the use of poetic dialogue and allegorical storytelling dealing with political and philosophical issues.
