The head coach of South Korea's swimming national squad has resigned over a shameful scandal involving hidden cameras installed in the dressing room of a swimming pool apparently to take candid shots of female swimmers, officials said Wednesday.

The Korea Swimming Federation said that coach Ahn Jong-taek, 49, stepped down to take responsibility for the scandal which has shocked South Korea's sports community. He had joined the national swimming squad in 2008.

"Ahn has tendered his resignation," a federation official told Aju News, declining to disclose details.

The Korea Olympic Committee has conducted a search through the restrooms and change rooms of South Korea's two state-run sports villages used by Olympic delegates and national teams.

The search followed a separate police investigation into an unnamed swimmer who is suspected of having taken candid shots with a secret camera installed in the female dressing room of a swimming pool from 2013 at an athletes' village in Jincheon, 88 kilometers (54 miles) south of Seoul.

The committee has launched an investigation, saying anyone involved in such ugly behaviors would be punished. Following its visual check last Saturday, it was to stage a second search Tuesday with radio locators.

The committee said swimming coaches and pool managers would be questioned to see if they knew about the hidden cameras which provide for a jail term of fewer than five years or a fine of 10 million won (8,880 US dollars).
