South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom has introduced a small child tracking device the size of a matchbox, connected to the company's internet on things (IoT) network called LoRa.

SK said the device called Gper is cheaper than conventional tracking devices with its service fee about 30 percent cheaper. "Because mobile communication-based child tracking services are now commonly available, we decided to introduce Gper to the market," an SK official told reporters Monday.

Gper is also useful in tracking elders with mental illness and can be attached to school buses or freight transports to get real-time location information.

The tracker has an SOS button to help a child alert caregivers of emergency situations. Using LoRa's network, Gper is operable for five days with a single 90-minute charge and transmits location data every ten minutes. LoRa is a wireless network optimized for IoT environment. Each communication node can send data as far as 20 kilometers (12 miles).
