Helped by patriotic support from home fans, South Korea's domestic film industry has seen rapid growth to generate great economic riffle effects, a state watchdog said Thursday.

Last year, the Korean box office posted 2.11 trillion won ($1.79 billion) in ticket sales and received 217 million viewers, according to data from the Korean Film Council.

On average, every South Korean saw movies 4.34 times last year, compared to 3.6 times in the United States and 0.61 times in China, the council said.

In 2015, K-films created 38,000 jobs and 1.68 trillion won in added value. However, exports of K-films stood at $29.37 million, the council said, adding their competitiveness was not so strong abroad.
