3D TV, the hot tech product since 2010, is certain to meet its end as major TV makers LG and Sony may take their hands off. The two companies, who had trudged through the 3D TV market, are finally leaving out 3D TVs from this year's lineup.

Samsung, the world's largest TV maker, abandoned its 3D TV line last year.

IT specialist media CNET reported last week that LG and Sony, the last two 3D TV makers, will pull their plug in 2017, based on the fact that 3D was not existent among the new products introduced at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show.

The eye-popping 3D TV was once considered one of the most promising future technologies, drawing tech giants into the 3D TV race. The hype was fueled by the global success of "Avatar", an iconic 3D film, but the heat soon died because it lacked contents.

The downfall has been somewhat anticipated for years. Data from an analyst group, NPD, showed 3D TV sales cornered 23 percent of global TV shipments in 2012, compared to 16 percent in 2015 and eight percent in 2016. The market share of 3D TVs dropped from 40 percent in 2012 to 11 percent in 2016.

Some experts say the 3D TV technology was replaced by new visual technologies such as Ultra High Definition (or 4K display) and Hyper Dynamic Range Rendering, which makes images more vibrant in color. The new visual technologies became the priority for TV makers recently and are the most preferred tech among consumers.
