Naver, South Korea's largest search portal company, is considering establishing an artificial intelligence lab in Silicon Valley in an effort to compete with Google and other global players.
Naver invited Korean engineers working at IT companies such as Google and Facebook last weekend for consultations on its AI lab. "As part of preparation for the lab's establishment, we are in contact with Korean and local engineers," a Naver official said. Graduates from the Ivy League are the prime target of recruiting.
Naver operates an R&D center for AI-based autonomous driving vehicles. AI and machine learning were adopted into its search portal to provide improved translations and tailored search results. Naver's subsidiary LINE based in Japan acquired Vincle, a Japanese AI-based home appliance company earlier this month.
Naver leads AI research at home, but it is far behind global companies like Google, Microsoft and Intel which have created AI from the early 1990s.
