Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker, has acquired state approval to make the field test of its autonomous driving system using artificial intelligence deep learning abilities, officials said.

The Ministry of Transport and Land said Monday that it has approved a road test of Samsung's self-driving vehicle. Samsung became the 19th company to obtain such approval.

Samsung will use Hyundai Motor's Grandeur sedan mounted with a laser scanner, radar and sensors for an advanced self-driving system which requires no intervention by drivers.

Samsung has stepped up efforts to develop auto-related technology and software about in-car entertainment and autonomous driving. In November last year, it acquired Harman International Industries, a US-based global leader in connected car technology, for about eight billion US dollars.

Despite its reputation as the producer of world-class carmakers and a most advanced mobile communication infrastructure, South Korea is the latecomer in the connected and autonomous vehicle market.
