A 20-year-old man has been detained for making an online threat to carry out a terrorist attack on South Korea's new liberal President Moon Jae-in who took office last week.

The man identified by his surname Lee living in the southwestern port city of Gunsan was put into custody last Saturday for blackmailing, police said. The jobless was accused of putting his threat on an online community, "I would perform a terrorist attack on the president."

The man, arrested at his home, also uploaded pictures of butane canisters and a panoramic photograph of the presidential Blue House in Seoul.

"I only did it for fun. I had no intentions to assassinate the president," Lee was quoted as telling investigators who have yet to make a decision on whether to bring official charges against him.
