Qualcomm Technologies Inc., the US developer and manufacturer of wireless semiconductor chips, has set up a strategic partnership with Naver to use the South Korean portal service's new AI multi-purpose platform "Clova" for the Internet of Things (IoT).

The partnership will accelerate the commercialization of IoT devices using Qualcomm's platforms and Clova, the American company said in a statement posted on the website of its Korea branch.

AI hardware makers will gain easy access to Clova through Qualcomm's platforms, while Naver will actively use Qualcomm's system-on-chips for its Clova-based AI platforms and products, the company said.

Clova has a competitive edge because it does not need dedicated hardware or software to run and it can be operated on any smartphones. Through its Japan-based subsidiary, Line, Naver last week unleashed prototypes of its smart speakers powered by Clova to venture into the fast-growing AI assistant industry.
