An emotional online petition calling for a grave penalty to a teen-aged girl who is on trial on charges of murder is gaining widespread support with more than 102,000 people signing up or offering their condolence in two days.

The petition was launched Monday by the mother of an eight-year-old girl nicknamed "Sarang" who was abducted by a 17-year-old girl at a park in the western port city of Incheon on March 29 and strangled to death at her home. Her body was dismembered and dumped.

The girl allegedly sent a social media message to her friend that she was going out for "hunting" and presented a body part as a gift.

In her petition that would be sent to a court, the mother called for public support to bring a severe legal punishment to the girl. "I need your help so that such a shocking incident will not happen again in our country." The petition insisted the girl's parents hired a team of lawyers to whitewash a brutal crime as an "accidental" case involving a mental patient who acted impulsively.
