South Koreans are under constant watch with about 11 million surveillance cameras installed everywhere for public and private purposes. That means an ordinary person is exposed to 80 to 200 cameras every day.

Surveillance cameras play multiple roles and are used to track and catch criminals, check traffic conditions, and look out for safety issues in residential areas. Officials in Namyangju, a satellite city east of Seoul, think they need more surveillance cameras and presented the fresh idea of using black box cameras stalled in taxis as mobile monitoring devices.

They will be used mainly to check traffic conditions and on-road accidents. "The cameras will be linked to the main control center through LTE connection. Taxi drivers can upload traffic conditions," a Namyangju official told Aju News. "The whole process will be carried out simply. Just press a button on a specialized black box."

Once traffic conditions are uploaded to the control center, real-time information will be displayed at digital signboards to alert drivers.  For its service in January next year, the city has deployed 500 black box cameras to taxi drivers. The traffic reporting feature will be available by upgrading a firmware.
