South Korea's largest telecommunication firm, KT, joined hands with LGU+, the third-largest mobile carrier, to launch world's first commercial NB-IoT (narrow band IoT), a network which connects appliances and devices together over cellular networks.

IoT (internet of things) technology has now become part of daily lives, connecting devices at places like homes and offices and creating a network to automate and enable the linked operation of devices.  KT plans to start its NB-IoT service in August while LGU+ will commercialize remote gas meters by the end of this year. There are similar NB-IoT networks set up by foreign telecom companies just in small areas.

KT and LGU+ will share an open lab to support the developers of NB-IoT technology and create interlinks between networks. They plan to simplify the process of being certified as network operators by providing IoT developers with mutual qualifications.
