President Moon Jae-in's move to raise income and corporate taxes at large is still controversial but a survey found a tax hike for high-income earners and big companies has received overwhelming public support.

The president's policy advisory panel has said the government needs 178 trillion won (159 billion US dollars) to implement Moon's election pledges that focused on welfare and economic justice. A tax hike is inevitable but Moon stressed that average citizens or small firms would not be affected.

A poll of 507 people, published Monday by Realmeter, a Seoul-based pollster, found that 85.6 percent supported the idea of collecting more taxes from top-earning individuals and businesses while 10 percent opposed it.  The increase won support regardless of ideology and age.
