South Korea declared its bid for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, an international tournament run by the Asian Football Confederation, setting the stage for a bidding war with China.
The Korea Football Association said it decided to bid for the AFC tournament at a general meeting chaired by President Cung Mong-gyu. AFC members are to vote in May next year on who will host the 2023 event.
The United Arab Emirates will host the 2019 Asian Cup with the number of participants expanded from 16 to 24 teams. South Korea last hosted the tournament in 1960.
