State prosecutors will launch a criminal investigation into South Korea's ambassador to Ethiopia for sexual harassment along with disciplinary punishment by the foreign ministry.

The move came after foreign ministry investigators conducted an on-site probe into allegations that Ambassador Kim Moon-hwan was involved in sexual harassment while drinking with female interns from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), a state organization which implements South Korea's grant aid programs for developing countries.

Investigators have revealed "sexual misdeeds" targeting multiple victims in the African country, the ministry said, adding the ambassador would face a criminal investigation by prosecutors and heavy punishment by a disciplinary committee.

In a separate case, an envoy in Ethiopia has been expelled to face a criminal investigation for raping a contracted female worker on July 8 when she was drunk. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has described the case as "very deplorable".
