Instead of a time-consuming, manual door-to-door inspection, a provincial city has launched a pilot project to check tap water usage with wireless modules using an IoT network.

In Daegu, some 239 kilometers (148 miles) southeast of Seoul, city officials have installed wireless monitoring modules in the tap water meters of 3,649 houses. The modules can send data through an IoT network provided by top mobile carrier SK Telecom.

Using a smartphone app, citizens can read their meter and estimated fees. Through new digital devices, the city hopes to acquire precise information on the underground leakage of tap water.
