Seijun Suzuki, a Japanese filmmaker who died in February this year, was named the "Asian Filmmaker of the Year" by Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

BIFF organizers said in a statement Thursday that they have picked Suzuki for his contribution to the development of Asian genre movies and cinematic works. The film director is well known for his B-rated Yakuza cult movies such as "Tokyo Drifter" and "Go To Hell, Bastard".

The award will be presented at the opening of the film festival on October 12. Suzuki died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at age 93.

Suzuki's works, dating back to the 60s, have inspired directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Jim Jarmusch. Other Hollywood filmmakers paid homage to Suzuki in various films such as "Ghost Dog".
