Medals to be awarded at next year's Winter Olympics in South Korea's eastern ski resort of Pyeongchang were unveiled. They were designed to represent Korea's iconic cultures.

Pyeongchang's organizing committee and the sports ministry held a joint event in Seoul on Thursday to show gold, silver and bronze medals for the Winter Games. The event was held simultaneously on the other side of the globe, at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, with President Moon Jae-in in attendance.

Designers used Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, and Hanbok, the traditional form of clothing, for the medals to highlight "the refined beauty of Korea," organizers said.

The ribbons which hold the medals were made of traditional fabric material and medal cases were designed to represent traditional roof tiles called "Giwa". The committee will make 259 sets, including 222 for athletes and the rest to be kept as reserves and for display.
