The game developing subsidiary of South Korea's second-largest web service provider "Kakao" has ventured into a "screen golf" industry, vowing to step up its push for the development of a new AI-based sports game platform for virtual and augmented reality services.

Kakao Games said it has acquired Maum Golf, the country's second-largest supplier of golf simulators and sensors after Golfzon. As a full subsidiary of the game developer, Maum Golf, known for its brand "T-up Vision", will be reborn as Kakao VX.

"Kakao VX puts emphasis on combination and creation of a new value pushed by the Kakao community, and it will be a challenge and opportunity for KaKao Games to move beyond the game business to a new realm," said Kakao Games head Nam Goong-hoon.

Nam hopes to run Kakao VX as an innovative entity through the combination of virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence that would be used to create a new platform. T-up Vision has already adopted an AI-based voice recognition system.

There are more than 7,000 "screen golf" cafes equipped with multiple simulators that have played a crucial role in boosting the popularity of golf in South Korea.
