In a strategic move to gain competitiveness in the fast-growing global connected and automated vehicles (CAV) market, Hyundai will invest five million US dollars to support the creation of collaborated testing grounds for next-generation cars in development as a founder-level sponsor.

"The Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is entering into a long-term partnership with the American Center for Mobility (ACM)," Hyundai said in a statement on Wednesday. "As a founding member, we will help set the direction for CAV standards and test advanced technologies in a safe environment for the North American customer."

ACM is a non-profit 500-acre testing ground for CAV in Michigan. It is also designated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as one of ten proving grounds for autonomous vehicle testing. Hyundai said its investment would help advance its technologies in safety, connectivity, cybersecurity and autonomous vehicles.

HATCI is Hyundai's Michigan-based research and development center established in 1986. The research center supports the development of Hyundai's North American operations and global programs. By contributing to the development of ACM, Hyundai joined the ranks of other founders; AT&T, Toyota and Ford.

According to Intel's data, the global CAV market is expected to reach seven trillion US dollars by 2050. Many carmakers and technology companies including Tesla, Google and Amazon are trying to gain core technologies related to the next-generation vehicle industry.
