Sony introduced a new version of Aibo, a robot dog which was discontinued 11 years ago. The AI-featuring robot dog will recognize its master and understand simple commands.

Aibo, which means companion in Japanese, is 2.2 kilograms and about 30 centimeters long in a shape of a small dog. The main difference from the older version is the new Aibo's AI. The robot dog which comes with a price tag of 198,000 yen, (1,738 US dollars), can interact with its master by reading facial expressions and mimic emotions, Sony said Wednesday.

According to the Japanese tech giant, Aibo will be released in January next year.

Sony ambitiously launched Aibo in 1999 and the market's response was explosive. About 150,000 units were sold immediately. The robot pet was loved by Japanese single households and families living in apartments. However, Aibo was discontinued in 2006.
