The mayor of Seoul unveiled what appeared to be a costly project to turn Seoul into a "solar" city with a solar energy system built everywhere in homes and buildings for complete energy self-reliance.

By 2020, Mayor Park Won-soon hopes to expand the use of solar energy and produce electricity equivalent to one nuclear power plant in the capital crowded with nearly 20 percent of South Korea's total population of 51 million.

"We will install solar power in all available public facilities and create solar landmarks all over Seoul," he said. "In the future, Seoul will become a city that is completely hot with solar power and attracts companies, investors and researchers from all over the world."

With solar power at homes and buildings, every citizen will be able to earn money by investing in various solar funds and reap economic benefits as a power generator, Park said without providing a concrete timetable and other details such as financing.

He said Seoul could become a "city of the sun" if every citizen earns money by investing in various solar funds. "Solar power will be everywhere in Seoul and become our daily life and the city's landscape."

"By reducing the amount of fine dust and greenhouse gas emissions through solar energy, Seoul will be transformed into a clean and sustainable city famous for energy self-reliance," Park said.

Park's idea corresponds with President Moon Jae-in's campaign aimed at replacing fossil and nuclear energy with clean and renewable energy like solar and wind power.
