South Korean President Moon Jae-in will make a four-day state visit to China next week that includes a summit with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, and a trip to China's southwestern city of Chongqing, the president's office said.

Moon will leave for Beijing on December 13 as part of his first visit to China since he took office in May. His office said Moon would also talk with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and other officials before heading to Chongqing on December 15.

The trip will provide an opportunity for the two countries to quickly mend ties, which have been soured by the deployment of a U.S. missile shield in South Korea, Blue House spokesman Park Soo-hyun told reporters.

In a joint announcement on October 31, South Korea and China agreed on an early turnaround in strained relations. However, Beijing has been slow to ease trade and other restrictions.
