SEOUL, Dec. 22 (Aju News) -- A 40-year-old police sergeant died this week after he fell from the ninth floor of an apartment building while trying to stop a suicidal man jumping through the window of his locked room.
The tragic accident took place on Thursday when Jung Yeon-ho, an officer in Daegu, some 238 kilometers (147 miles) southeast of Seoul, received an emergency call from a mother that her 30-year-old son was trying to commit suicide, police said.
The son had purchased a set of brown coal briquettes, a commonly used tool for suicide. When Jung arrived at the scene, the son locked the door of his room and opened the window.
The police sergeant tried to reach the son through another window, but he slipped and fell. Emergency crews carried the officer to a nearby hospital but he failed to recover and was pronounced dead on Friday morning.
