SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Aju News) -- The state-run operator of nuclear power plants agreed Monday with a solar energy firm to build South Korea's biggest floating solar power plant capable of producing 100 megawatts of electricity on the surface of a man-made lake along the west coast.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Hwaseong Solar Energy and Hwaseong City to push for a solar energy project worth 220 billion won (202 million US dollars). The project calls for the construction of a floating solar power system that would occupy 8.3 percent of Hwaseong Lake, which was created after city authorities completed a 9.8 kilometer-long seawall.
South Korea has mapped out a new energy roadmap calling for an injection of about 110 trillion won into renewable energy by 2030 to support President Moon Jae-in's campaign aimed at replacing old nuclear and coal-powered thermal power plants with clean and renewable energy sources. About 60 percent of the money would be spent on installing solar panels mainly in reclaimed lands, reservoirs and idle state lands.
