SEOUL -- In an effort to maintain its reputation as the world's largest OLED TV maker, South Korea's LG Electronics on Monday released new models mounted with its artificial intelligence platform that can understand and carry out voice commands.

LG unveiled two variants for its high-end TVs, LG OLED TV AI ThinQ and LG Super Ultra HD TV AI ThinQ, which can understand sentences in a spoken language. "We aim to step ahead of our rivals with the new TVs," an LG official said in a statement, describing OLED TVs as true premium TVs.

The new TVs can carry out tasks such as "Please turn off the TV when I finish watching this program" or "Play classical music from YouTube". Users can also ask them to switch on or turn down the volume. The AI platform optimizes the quality of displays, removing digital noise and finding a perfect ratio of contrast and brightness.

OLED TVs use films of self-illuminating organic compounds to emit light in response to electric currents. OLED displays are relatively durable and can display clearer and brighter images, but they cost more than LED or LCD displays.

According to Research Nester, a New York-based market research firm, the global OLED TV market will reach 21.3 billion US dollars by 2023. LG is the frontrunner attracting consumers with durable, high-quality OLED TVs which save a lot of energy.

LG's home entertainment business head Kwon Bong-suk said his company can produce about ten million OLED TVs annually by 2021. He said OLED TVs would take up around 20 percent of the company's combined TV sales this year, compared to 15 percent last year.
