SEOUL -- U.S. aircraft maker Boeing said Wednesday it would establish a new research center in South Korea to develop technologies for future aerospace products such as artificial intelligence and smart cabin.
The company said it is in discussion with the Seoul government about its research center which will focus on accelerating autonomy, artificial intelligence, avionics, analytics, smart cabin, smart factory and other technologies for future aerospace products. The center will open this year in a location to be announced later.
"The new center will serve as a great test bed for Boeing to collaborate and develop future technologies with many leading organizations in Korea," Boeing Korea President Eric John said in a statement. Boeing, which has a wide range of commercial and defense contracts in South Korea, plans to staff the center with locally-hired technology experts.
"Korea is home to premier talent and industrial partners, as well as policies that foster innovation development. These factors combine to make Korea an ideal collaborator on aerospace innovations that will change the world," Boeing's chief technology officer and vice president Greg Hyslop was quoted as saying.
"This new center is a natural progression of years of successful research and technology partnerships in the region, and we're excited about the opportunity to expand our investment," he said.
The American company said South Korea is one of its top 10 largest international markets. Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has provided parts to Boeing. In 2016, Korean Air forged a new deal with Boeing to jointly develop an unmanned variant of the MD 500 light attack helicopter.
