SEOUL -- Goobne, one of South Korea's major chicken franchises, has opened its first Indonesian store in Jakarta with a localized menu using its trademark hot spicy "volcano" sauce.

Goobne, known for oven roasted chickens, said Wednesday that the two-story outlet in Jakarta would serve as a springboard for its business expansion in Southeast Asia. The franchise put spicy chickens in front at its store in Jakarta, saying the popularity of Korean culinary culture is growing in Indonesia, helped by the Korean pop culture wave "Hallyu".

K-pop stars eating certain snacks and food have created food fads both in South Korea and aboard. Chimaek, a combination of beef and chicken, has become a culturally significant force in drinking culture in South Korea. Like other chicken franchises locked in fierce competition in the saturated domestic market, Goobne has expanded its business abroad to open stores in Hong Kong, China and Japan.
