SEOUL -- SK Broadband, a Seoul-based broadband Internet access provider, will participate in the Southeast Asia-Japan 2 consortium (SJC2) for the construction of a high-performance submarine cable connecting nine Asian countries.
The 10,500-kilometer cable has links to eleven cable landing stations in the region and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2020. SK Broadband, a wholly owned subsidiary of South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom, said Thursday it would invest about 100 billion won (946 million US dollars).
The consortium involves telecom and technology firms in South Korea, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Cambodia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Facebook.
The cable will feature up to eight pairs of high capacity optical fiber with an initial design capacity of 144 Terabits per second, roughly the equivalent of simultaneously streaming 5.76 million ultra-high definition videos per second. It supports high bandwidth intensive requirements such as the Internet of Things, robotics and artificial or virtual reality applications.
