SEOUL -- Ulsan, the southeastern industrial city which is home to Hyundai Motor and other key plants, will establish infrastructure for self-driving cars by October.
The city government said in a statement Tuesday that Ulsan Technopark, a technology development complex, would lead a joint project to develop and simulate core technologies for cooperative autonomous driving, which is vital to the actual operation of autonomous vehicles.
A communications infrastructure will be built along a seven kilometer (4.3 miles) long road in Ulsan to support a V2X (vehicles to everything) feature which allows cars to communicate with traffic lights, vehicles and a control center.
The city plans to develop an autonomous vehicle based on Ioniq, Hyundai's full electric vehicle, of level 4 automation that requires no intervention from a driver unless there's an emergency situation. K-CITY, a testing ground which simulates urban areas, is under construction in Hwaseong south of Seoul.
