SEOUL -- South Korea's second-largest semiconductor company SK hynix predicted a prolonged supply shortage in the global microchip market, citing strong demand for server products as internet data-center operators especially in China and the United States expand their investment.

The chipmaker said that global demands for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips is expected to rise by more than 20 percent throughout this year.

Demand for high-capacity server DRAMs will continue to rise thanks to brisk investments by internet data centers and the release of new devices using artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT), it said, vowing to complete the construction of new chip lines at home and in China.

The company's first-quarter net profit jumped 64.4 percent on-year to 3.1 trillion won (2.89 billion US dollars). Operating profit was up 77 percent to 4.36 trillion won while sales rose 38.6 percent to 8.71 trillion won.
