SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics announced a partnership with Dezeen, a Britain-based design and architectural magazine, to host a design contest aimed at promoting new premium QLED TVs installed with the so-called Ambient Mode.

During the contest from June 25 to August 3, designers will compete to create graphics for the Ambient Mode feature on QLED TVs, Samsung said. The total prize money will be 9,500 euros ($11,072) with the grand prize winner to receive 8,000 euros.

"The Ambient Mode design competition is meant to develop imagery that resonates with each of our consumers," Chu Jong-suk, senior vice president of Samsung's visual display business, said in a statement.

Samsung said its Ambient Mode, built into QLED TVs, makes the screen appear transparent by mimicking the appearance of the wall behind it. It also enhances its environment by overlaying additional imagery and information.

Samsung's new QLED TVs feature clear picture quality regardless of the surrounding environment or the brightness of contents, backed by a magic screen feature which displays various information from news to photos even when not in use.

Samsung and its domestic rival, LG, are competing in the global TV market with QLED and OLED TVs respectively.

Samsung insists QLED panels maintain their color reproduction range for a long time because they use inorganic materials while OLED displays lose brightness. LG says OLED can achieve the best picture quality with relatively low luminance thanks to its ability to deliver perfect blacks.
