SEOUL -- South Korea's two top telecom companies, KT and SK Telecom, have agreed to secure board membership of the ORAN Alliance, a carrier-led effort to drive new levels of openness in the radio access network of next-generation wireless systems.

The move comes on the heels of an aggressive drive by South Korean firms to commercialize a 5G mobile network ahead of China and any other countries. The 5G network is considered a vital part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution as it can transmit a large capacity of data fast.

At first, SK Telecom will share "fronthaul" technology that transmits wireless data signals collected from base stations to the central device. KT will participate in ORAN tasks related to 5G technology and equipment.

The ORAN Alliance was launched by AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO and Orange in an effort to drive new levels of openness. It is committed to evolving radio access networks, making them more open and smarter than previous generations.
