SEOUL -- LG Innotek, the electric component unit of South Korea's LG Group, disclosed an aggressive marketing strategy to become a global player in the field of light emitting diodes (LEDs) for "grow (plant) light", an artificial light source tailored to stimulate plant growth.

The LED maker said in a statement that with about 30 LED products with different light wavelengths and purposes, it would try to gain a strong foothold in the global grow light industry, which is now led by Japanese and Chinese companies. The company targets lighting equipment and module makers worldwide.

Grow lights are popular in places where the available hours of daylight are insufficient. LEDs can mimic light wavelengths of the sun. Different types of grow light LEDs are used, depending on the type of plants being cultivated.

"By using grow light LEDs, farmers can stimulate the growth of crops and harvest top quality products," an LG Innotek official was quoted as saying. LG's specialized LEDs can be used to ward off bugs and kill germs and thicken the leaves of plants.

Last year, LG Innotek introduced the world's strongest germ-killing UV LED capable of sterilizing water and air. The company plans to release a new grow light LED which can increase the amount of fruit glucose this year.

According to Grand View Research, a San Francisco-based market research company, the global grow light market is expected to grow from $2.6 billion in 2016 to $8.6 in 2025.
