SEOUL -- KEB Hana Bank, a leading commercial bank in South Korea, joined a campaign for paperless banking by using tablet PCS at the widow of all branches to remove paper statements in account management by the end of August.

The paperless window service has spread rapidly among South Korean commercial banks to make transactions easier and reduce cost. Customers are happier because there are fewer forms to fill and services are delivered much faster.

KEB Hana Bank said Thursday that an electronic document system would be created with a tablet PC provided at the window. Customers do not have to write down their name and signature on paper documents repeatedly.

The change comes amid the growing popularity of two internet-only banking firms in South Korea. K-Bank, the first online banking service, was launched in April last year, followed by Kakao bank three months later. The two internet-only lenders have built a strong base of young customers due to their user-friendly service interactions and transactions.

The explosive popularity of Kakao Bank run by the country's web service giant Kakao surprised South Korea's financial community which has been dominated by large commercial banks known for their picky and haughty attitude in lending.
