SEOUL -- German auto giant BMW will recall 106,317 vehicles sold in South Korea, including its popular 520d sedans, for emergency safety diagnosis and the exchange of faulty parts that could have caused a series of fire on the road.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement Thursday that BMW would conduct a safety check from Friday to ease growing safety concerns among consumers and start changing EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) modules in mid-August.

This year alone, there have been at least five known cases of fire involving BMW cars in South Korea. The Korea Transportation Safety Authority has launched an investigation.

BMW Korea has presented a voluntary recall program, saying that due to an EGR defect, the high-temperature exhaust gas is suspected of inflowing into the intake manifold without being cooled, leading to the creation of a hole and a fire on the engine cover, the ministry said.
