SEOUL -- LG Electronics, a major home appliance and smartphone maker in South Korea, opened its overseas research center for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in Canada through the partnership with the University of Toronto.

The company said in a statement on Wednesday that the Toronto AI Lab would carry out various research from September. LG plans to focus on securing AI source technologies through research in the field of deep learning and actively invest in AI start-ups in Canada

"Though this cooperation, we will show that the 'open partnership' strategy is also effective in the development of original technology," LG CTO Park Il-pyeong was quoted as saying. "We will study artificial intelligence technology that can give real value to customers."

LG's AI platform called "ThinQ" has been applied to smartphones, home appliances and other devices.
