SEOUL -- Digital football teams from 12 countries clashed head to head to take home the winning prize of $10,000 at the world's very first artificial intelligence (AI) World Cup hosted by South Korea's prominent state research institute.

The two-day AI World Cup involving 29 teams from South Korea, the United States, India, France and other countries kicked off Tuesday at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) in the central city of Daejeon. Semi-final and final matches will take place on Wednesday.

A team consists of five AI players who will play a 10-minute-long match against another with no human intervention to see which one has AI commentating and reporting skills.

Standings of AI commentators will be determined by the quality of play-by-play commentaries as well as their short-term predictions of matches, the AI World Cup committee said, adding AI reporters will be assessed on the quality of their summaries after matches.

The winner will pocket $10,000 with $5,000 going to the runner-up. The best AI commentator and the best AI reporter will receive $5,000 each.
